Acting Camp

More Than Lines: Light Bulbs From Acting Camp

June 21, 20252 min read

When I signed up for a two-week acting camp this summer, I expected to sharpen my technique, pick up a few tips, and maybe make some new friends. But I left with so much more. I gained tools that stretch beyond the stage, memories that still make me smile, and a deeper connection not only to acting, but to people.

We spent a lot of time on the fundamentals of craft. We worked on blinking less and thinking more, letting my thoughts show instead of just delivering lines. We broke down the seven-step audition process, which taught me how to prepare in a way that’s thorough and repeatable. I learned to listen, think, and respond, a deceptively simple approach that made my performances feel so much more alive.

One of the most powerful moments for me was a connection exercise. We placed our hands lightly on top of each other’s, locked eyes, and tried to send a message without saying a word. We could sense each other’s thoughts, emotions, and hesitations. It taught me how to really connect, not just perform. By the end of the exercise, I had a few tears running down my face, and I had no idea why. Our coach, Erik, said that it's normal. He said that a lot of the time, half of the class would be in tears.

I also discovered the value of breath work, like the Wim Hof method, which helps calm your nervous system and keep you fully present. It was about opening up, letting go, and tapping into something deeper.

Beyond all of this, I met some of the sweetest, most creative people. It is wild how quickly you bond when you are all taking risks and being vulnerable together. Now some of us are even working on a short film, turning what started as camp exercises into something lasting and real.

So yes, I went to camp to become a better actor. But I left with so much more than lines. I left with new friends, a fuller heart, and a deeper understanding of what it means to truly connect. I also took home memories I will keep replaying long after the final curtain.
